Super Star Scientist
Sam!

Experiment:  Lava Lamp
Objective:  Paul taught us oil and water don't mix.  But if we add Alka-Seltzer, carbon dioxide forms bubbles that rise.

Sam had all his materials ready to go!

First, Sam filled an empty bottle with oil.

Next he added water.

Then he added 10-20 drops of red food coloring.

Finally, he "plopped" in pieces Alka-Seltzers.

He placed the cap on the bottle

…and we watched as the carbon dioxide bubbles from the Alka-Seltzer rose up!

Sam had made us our very own Lava Lamp!

Conclusion:  Water is more dense than oil.  If we add carbon dioxide it will push the water up.

What fun, Sam!
Thanks for being such a well-preparded scientist!
