Super Star Scientist
Sam!

Experiment:  Lava Lamp
Objective:  Paul taught us oil and water don't mix.  But if we add Alka-Seltzer, carbon dioxide forms bubbles that rise.

Sam had all his materials ready to go!

First, Sam filled an empty bottle with oil.

Next he added water.

Then he added 10-20 drops of red food coloring.

Finally, he "plopped" in pieces Alka-Seltzers.

He placed the cap on the bottle

…and we watched as the carbon dioxide bubbles from the Alka-Seltzer rose up!

Sam had made us our very own Lava Lamp!

Conclusion:  Water is more dense than oil.  If we add carbon dioxide it will push the water up.

What fun, Sam!
Thanks for being such a well-preparded scientist!

I am so proud of our class's performance today in BIG chapel!
They were all such great speakers and were so well behaved and poised in front of the entire school!

After chapel, we went to the cafeteria for a special performance from
The Story Time Theater!
We had fun hearing the story of
Winston's Stone Soup!

This week in math, we are
measuring and comparing
classroom items using
balances!
The students worked in groups
to weigh and compare
items to find which one was the
lightest out of each pair.

Grant, Reese, Rhyce, and Paul

Amina, Sam, and Thomas

Douglas, Ryan, and Addison

Caoilinn, Payton, and Smith

Our class is on a roll in PE!
We've won the
Golden Super Duck
6 out of our last 7 PE days!

That means we are the quickest class to line up,get quiet, and listen to our PE coaches!

(I spy the Golden Super Duck balancing on Payton's head!)

Way to go Amina!
You earned your
Super Star Reader Sundae!

Keep up the great reading!!

We have 2 boys to celebrate this week!

Grant is a Super Star Reader!
He earned his sundae today!

And Sam lost a tooth!
(with the help of a little tug from Mrs. Tenery!)

We have a
Birthday Girl!!
Amina turned 6 today!!

Amina is proudly showing her 6 fingers!

We were so excited to sing to Amina and celebrate her birthday with her!

We hope all your birthday wished come true!

Super Star Scientist
Smith!

Experiment:  Invisible Shield
Objective:  How can paper submerged in water remain dry?

Smith had his supplies ready to go…

First, Smith crumpled up an 8.5 X 11 piece of paper.

Then he put the paper in the bottom of a cup making sure when he turned the cup over the paper stayed in the cup.

Next, he turned the cup upside down and submerged it straight down into the water.

After a couple seconds, he pulled the cup out of the water and the paper was still DRY!!
So cool!!

Scientist Smith brought enough supplies for each classmate to get to try the experiment for themselves!
Here's Sam showing you the dry paper!

Even Mrs. Tenery tried it out!
We had a 100% success rate performing this fun experiment.

Conclusion:  The paper is dry because water can't get into the cup since it is already filled with air, and the air can't escape because it is lighter than the water.

Way to go, Smith!
Your experiment was well prepared and you really knew the science behind it!
